Sarah was ordained Deacon in The Church of England in July 2004. In January 2005 she hit the headlines when she was outed to a national newspaper as having made a gender change many years previously. The story was covered in newspapers, television stations and on websites and blogs throughout the world. Representatives from the media went to her parishes and asked people what they thought about having an Assistant Curate who has made a 'sex-change'. The people supported her.
She has since appeared on Sunday Morning Live and The Heaven and Earth Show on BBC One, Woman's Hour, The World at One and Sunday on BBC Radio 4 and Woman to Woman on Premier Christian Radio. Sarah continues to be a contributor to national and local radio and television programmes as well as livestreams and webcasts.
Sarah was ordained priest in September 2005 despite criticism from some conservative Christians - even on the morning of the ordination itself.
Sarah is now the vicar of the City Parish of St John The Baptist, Cardiff in the Diocese of Llandaff.
Sarah talks about sex and gender, about gender changes and about having been outed as the first person to have made a gender change and then be ordained in The Church of England. She speaks on topics such as Diversity and Inclusion and the importance of support from the organisation for their LGBTI+ staff and on the problems which occur when this support is not there. In June 2021, Sarah was awarded a Pride Award by Attitude Magazine and in November 2021 she was the subject of a BBC World Service radio programme.
One of the most outstanding speakers was the Rev’d Sarah Jones . . . who was frank, engaging, and wholly at ease with a huge audience she had not been expecting . . . she got a standing ovation.
Sarah's talk was spot on! It was inspirational, sensitive, entertaining and pitched beautifully for the event.
Absolutely fascinating talk, and such a clear explanation of what is a very complicated subject.
This talk changed my life
